Picturesque Noosa is set to transform from laidback beach destination to global sporting focal point as the region gears up to host the sporting event that is the Noosa Triathlon and Multi Sports Festival from October 30.

For five days the beachside enclave will be home to some of the world’s leading triathletes, thousands of spectators, sporting amateurs, and enthusiasts as all enjoy one of the largest and most renowned sporting events in the world.

Here’s an insight into the Noosa Triathlon and Multi Sports Festival and why it’s an event that shouldn’t be missed.

A history of the Noosa Tri

Formally acknowledged as one of Queensland’s iconic events, the Noosa Triathlon and Multi Sports Festival is the largest Olympic distance triathlon in the world.

Held each year since 1983, the event sees the streets and beaches of Noosa shake off their casual village vibe to welcome the world’s leading athletes for a festival that comprises five days of professional and amateur events.

Featuring a focus on healthy living, fitness and fun, the festival culminates in one of the toughest triathlon races on the annual sporting calendar – the Ironman Noosa Triathlon.

Encompassing a 1.5km swim from Main Beach, a 40km cycle through the undulating Noosa Hinterland, and a 10km run through the streets of Noosa Sound, it’s an endurance event not for the faint hearted and has given rise to some of the biggest names in the sport.

On its own the tri draws a competitive field of 8500 athletes and is classed as one of Australia’s premier sporting events, commanding international interest.

Not just for the pros

A unique feature of the Noosa Triathlon and Multi Sports Festival is that it’s an inclusive event for all.

While the official Ironman triathlon undoubtedly draws top sporting talent and huge crowds, the five-day festival is designed to suit amateurs and enthusiasts of all ages, and encompasses charity, fun and a general focus on healthy living.

Festival events include:

  • Noosa Run Swim Run
  • Tour de Noosa – Garth Prowd Ride
  • Jaybird Noosa Breakfast Fun Run
  • Titan Noosa 1000 Ocean Swim
  • Noosa Superkidz Triathlon
  • Tingirana Noosa Special Triathlon
  • ASICS 5km Bolt
  • Legends Triathlon
  • Australian Open Criterium – Men
  • Australian Open Criterium – Women
  • Noosa Tri Charity Golf

Together, this makes the Noosa Triathlon and Multi Sports Festival one of the most anticipated sporting events on the Australian national calendar. And it’s all set against the stunning backdrop of Noosa’s world-renowned beaches, fabulous eateries, enviable shopping, and spectacular weather.
