All eyes on the lineup for the Noosa Festival of Surfing

All eyes will be on the Noosa lineup over the next week as this world-famous surf haven embraces an annual celebration of the history and diversity of surfing as a sport.

From March 10 to 17, Main Beach hosts the Noosa Festival of Surfing, drawing around 800 competitors from more than 20 countries to compete.

With a history that dates back to the early ‘90s, the Noosa Festival of Surfing is renowned as the biggest surf festival in the world by competitor numbers, and it’s not just on the water where all the action take’s place.

Here’s a little insight into what’s in store.

The Festival

Spanning eight days, the Noosa Festival of Surfing sees First Point the focus as competitors of all ages and surf styles take to the waves.

Boasting a mantra of “8 days of pure stoke”, the event attracts international surf superstars and local legends alike, with the festival featuring grommets, grandpas, dogs, body surfers, specialty and pro divisions. In fact, the Noosa Festival of Surfing is acclaimed as one of the most diverse surfing festivals in the world, incorporating everything from longboards to noseriders, tandem and more.

There’s an under 15s competition, an over 70s comp, a dog surfing exhibition, and a family event, and it’s all staged against a backdrop of the international talent who travel to take part.

More than surfing

The action and party-vibe of the surf festival extends far beyond the shoreline, with a host of entertainment and activities planned throughout the event.

There’s fashion parades, beachfront yoga, art exhibitions, market stalls and films. As it’s a family-friendly event, children are also encouraged to get in on the action, with activities including sand castle building and kids’ art workshops.

Entertainment

After a hard days’ surfing or spectating there’s nothing nicer than catching a set of some beachside tunes. The Festival of Surfing features a lineup of great Australian talent and a laid-back vibe. Bands headlining the afternoon and evenings throughout the festival include China Beach, The Swamps, Old Man Friday, Sunrose and more.

Environmental focus

It’s not all surf, sun and chilled tunes. Friday, March 16 sees sustainability in the spotlight, with events and guest speakers promoting a more eco-conscious community and lifestyle. This year Surfboard guru Nev Hyman, will be join the Noosa Festival to present his award-winning and life-changing NevHouse affordable housing made from recycled plastic, and will lead an early evening panel discussion on plastic waste.
