Noosa Alive

Noosa is set to showcase Australia’s finest culture when it throws open its doors and welcomes artists, musicians, playwrights and patrons alike for the 17th annual Noosa Alive festival this month.

Running from July 20 – 29, the event will feature over 250 artists across 10 days of dance, music, literature, food, thought, theatre, film and visual arts.

Here’s an insight into the festival’s history and the line-up of events scheduled for this year.

The festival

Described as “Australia’s premier regional performing arts and culture festival”, Noosa Alive has become one of the most popular fixtures on the region’s annual calendar.

The event sees galleries, theatres, halls and outside venues all utilised as part of a jam-packed line-up of performances, speakers and musical events.

This year it will feature three world premieres, six Australian premieres and five Queensland premiere performances staged in intimate venues throughout Noosa.

Names of note attending the 2018 Noosa Alive festival include singer Katie Noonan, the Queensland Ballet, poet laureate Michael Leunig, opera sensations the Ida Girls, popular young music theatre performer Blake Bowden, Carlotta, Queen of the Cross, journalist Peter Greste and more.

The 10-day festival will also feature arts in situ, slow food events and progressive dinners, a three-day food festival in Hastings Street, and a festival of literature, with a further highlight being fireworks on Saturday, July 21 on the river at Gympie Terrace.

History

The Noosa Alive festival has a history dating back almost 20 years after a group of talented artists decided the region needed a cultural festival.

The first event was staged in 2002, with prominent Australian playwright David Williamson, author Kristin Williamson, internationally renowned violinist Brett Dean, environmental activist Dr Michael Gloster, restaurateur Leonie Palmer-Fisher together with Rick Clayton and Ros McCauley the major instigators of the festival.

Over the years it has evolved to become one of Queensland’s finest cultural festivals drawing thousands of people to the Sunshine Coast to experience the best of drama, cabaret, dance, theatre, music, literature, visual arts and more.

Venues

Major venues for this year’s event include the Noosa J Theatre, Noosa Arts Theatre, the Pomona Majestic Theatre and the Butter Factory at Cooroy, but a host of outdoor spaces are also employed along with the region’s acclaimed restaurants.

Meanwhile, history is also in the spotlight with a series of heritage walks centred on the region’s hinterland townships.

The full program of events and venues is available at Noosa Alive.
